Downsizing was an exercise in city planning. Although the film had already been shot in its entirety, the layout of “Leisureland” hadn’t been finalized yet. I was part of the Art Department at ILM that worked backwards from the footage to figure out where each landmark in the film should go.

In Maya, I used Vray proxies, along with the animation tool MASH to distribute thousands of 3D houses and trees, helping to figure out density and look for the tiny city.

We also defined the look for each neighborhood, as well as all of the activity centers featured in the film.
